Back Pain in Great Neck: Acupuncture or Physical Therapy?
Ben Wong · · Updated

Acupuncture and physical therapy address different parts of a back-pain plan. In Great Neck, an assessment can help decide whether pain-focused acupuncture, movement rehabilitation, medical massage or coordination between services fits your needs. Combining services is an option rather than a requirement.
What each service contributes
- Acupuncture: discuss pain, symptom triggers, prior treatment and whether needle treatment is appropriate.
- Physical therapy: assess movement, strength and activity limits, then build a progressive exercise and activity plan.
- Medical massage: discuss soft-tissue tension, pressure tolerance and whether focused manual work is appropriate.
Match the visit to your goal
Difficulty lifting a bag, walking to the station or tolerating desk work gives the clinician a clearer starting point than “my back is bad.” Tell the team when symptoms began, whether pain travels into a leg and what makes it better or worse. Bring surgical instructions or relevant reports when applicable.
The Great Neck team and location
Our Great Neck office is at 38 S Station Plaza, Great Neck, NY 11021; telephone (516) 201-2345. Ben Wong, LAc provides acupuncture and can provide medical massage at this location. Wei (Sean) Li, DPT, LAc provides physical therapy and acupuncture. Confirm the chosen service and practitioner when booking.
How a combined appointment is arranged
An initial acupuncture or PT appointment is approximately 75 minutes each. The team can coordinate acupuncture, PT and medical massage on the same day according to symptoms and assessments. Ask for a confirmed sequence and total duration; do not assume three services fit inside one 75-minute slot. Fees and insurance benefits need separate confirmation.
When back pain needs prompt medical assessment
New loss of bladder or bowel control, saddle-area numbness or progressive leg weakness needs urgent medical assessment. Fever, significant trauma or other concerning new symptoms also change the appropriate next step. Do not wait for a routine therapy appointment in these situations.
Practical questions before booking
Do I need all three services?
No. Start with the service appropriate to your main limitation and assessment. Additional care should have a clear purpose.
How many visits until I improve?
There is no reliable fixed timetable for everyone. Agree on a functional goal and a reassessment point with your clinician.
